Phil oversees the strategic direction of the company and serves as its Principal Broker. He has over 30 years of industry experience in the areas of real estate operations, finance and investment. He purchased the company in 1985 and has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Barcus Company since.

An industry veteran, Phil's real estate expertise includes acquisition management, financing restructuring and facilitation, brokerage representation, real estate tax appeal, market analysis and investment search and analysis. Phil has broad experience in management, sales, and leasing of commercial and industrial properties, as well as conventional and affordable multifamily housing.

Phil served as the President of the Columbus Apartment Association, Treasurer of the CAA, President of the CAA Charitable Assistance Foundation and Trustee for the Ohio Apartment Association for multiple years.

Phil is the author of Guidebooks for Officers and Guidebook for Trustees for which the Columbus Apartment Association received the prestigious National Paragon Award for excellence from the National Apartment Association.

Jason is primarily responsible for the management and oversight of 29 market rate, tax credit and affordable multi-family properties and 15 commercial properties. Jason joined The Barcus Company with over 23 years of experience in the multi-family real estate industry.

Prior to joining The Barcus Company, Jason was the Regional Vice President for Edgewood Management headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Jason was responsible for the operation of a portfolio of conventional, affordable and tax credit properties totaling 4,290 units in six states and the District of Columbia.

Experienced in the multifamily industry since 1994, Gary’s expertise includes all aspects of building improvements, maintenance and safety.

Gary oversees the maintenance and safety programs for The Barcus Company since June 2013. Areas of expertise include: construction, maintenance, project management, inspection program development, quality control and safety code compliance in the workplace.

Shawna Sparks, COS, CMH, FHS
Regional Property Manager/Compliance Manager

Shawna joined The Barcus Company in June of 2016. She is primarily responsible for the management and oversight of 14 affordable, market rate, and tax credit multi-family properties. Shawna also oversees the compliance department which includes serving as the company’s 504 and EIV Coordinator.

Shawna has over a decade of experience in affordable housing. She specializes in HUD and Rural Development Housing communities. She began her career working in the compliance department for Provident Management located in Mansfield, Ohio; but then took on other roles such as: property manager, assistance district supervisor, property management trainer, compliance specialist, and regional manager. As the assistant to the district supervisor she had oversight of 18 multi-family properties in Southern Ohio. This portfolio included RD, HUD, and Tax Credit properties. Shawna’s duties included training property managers, auditing resident files, handling resident complaints, scheduling and completing unit inspections, as well as the direct oversight of the site staff.
